Clock Tower Film Analysis - 1572 Words

On August 1, 1966, former marine sharpshooter Charles Whitman rode the elevator to the top of the clock tower at the University of Texas with a high-powered sniper rifle and other deadly assault weapons and opened fire on the civilians below him. He held the University of Texas campus hostage for 96 minutes. Tower (2016), a documentary by Keith Maitland, sheds light on America’s first modern gun massacre. The documentary retells this story through archival footage of the event, animations, and interviews. The animations are rotoscoped, meaning they are traced over motion picture footage, frame by frame. In addition, the interviews are modern-day recollections from survivors, officers, and several bystanders who risked their own lives to†¦show more content†¦Unlike the other survivors, Claire endured most of the 96 minutes of the shooting. She laid, bloody and wounded, on the pavement of the South Mall for the majority of the time before eventually being rescued. Maitl and uses footage and animations to tell her story. Archival footage and animations model the two types of evidence, historical and fictional, presented and discussed by Bill Nichols in Representing Reality: Issues and Concepts and Documentary. While Nichols argues that fictional evidence is insignificant when put up against its historical counterpart, both are effective components of Tower. The example of Claire shows how both are used to their fullest potential. One of the most important aspects of Tower is that you, as the viewer, feel like you are at the University of Texas at the time of the shooting. This is due to the use of historical evidence. The archival footage and photographs give the viewer a visual (or visuals) to reference when discussing or thinking about the incident. As Nichols says, â€Å"They [historical videos, photographs] become pieces of evidence demonstrating the physical look of a historical event in a way no fictional likeness can ever duplicate however close its approximation† (117).
